Melngailskolas Big Band

Melngailskolas Big Band was founded on September 2013 by trumpeter and music teacher Janis Ivuskans. Big Band is formed from 27 Liepaja Music, Art and Design School students -  children and young people aged from 13 to 25 years. From that time is created some concert programmes which includes popular Christmas songs, music from Disney animation films, swing music, songs written by latvian composer Uldis Marhilevics and well known classic jazz compositions. 

Main achievements: 2nd place in the competition Swingin Saxonia in Germany, 1st place in the Welt Jugendmusic festival Zurich 2017, 1st place in the International Competition-Festival Wind Rhythms 2014 and 2015; 1st place and Main Prize in the International Competition-Festival Wind Rhythms 2016, Grand Prix in 8th International Festival "Pavasario Trimitai 2015" in Lithuania, 1st prize Cum Laude in 63rd European Youth Music Festival Neerpelt/Belgium, Special Award from Bydgoszcz youth palace Director as well as approval from Head of professional big band Jozef Eliash, 37th Musical Impressions festival, Bydgoszcz, Poland; great success in Open Air Stage concert, Poland; concerts in Liepaja, Riga, Skrunda, Ventspils, Embute etc.       

On July 2017 and 2018 Melngailskolas Big Band participated in the International Jazz festival in Aarhus / Denmark.

On March 4, 2016 for collective growth, active and outstanding achievments in international competitions in 2015 Big Band received Liepaja Culture Prize 2015 - statuette and bonus of EUR 2100.

On May 21, 2016 in concert hall Great Amber Big Band performed together with world class trumpet player Konstantins Jemeljanovs (USA).

On 2nd of July 2016 musicians participated in 13th International festival of jazz music in Marezige/Slovenia.

On 6th of July 2016 Big Band played swing music programm in festival in Pilzen/Czech Republic.

The main event in School year 2015/2016 was concert "Cartoon musical whirl" on 24th of February  with the fancy, energetic and unique soloist Ralfs Eilands. The success of the concert was fantastic - concert hall Great Amber big hall was  sold out month before. 1000 listeners were filled with positive emotions and cheered.

2014/2015 School year Big Band gave more than 10 Christmas concerts, young musicians participated in 23rd International Piano Stars Festival  with piano players Kristine Vertjanova, Zanda Loceniece and Agnese Eglina; gave charity concert with Andris Erglis and Dainis Skutelis, as well as concert program on April 10 with Uldis Marhilevics, Andris Erglis and Baiba Skurstene-Serdiuke. Very successful was 24th of May, when a Big Band with the music school boys choir and actor Victors Ellers participated in Latvia Television positive emotions show "To be!", where musicians won and got the main prize - viewer sympathy award.
